Graphene vs Ceramic Coating in India: What Is the Real Difference?

By Carsbuddy ·

"Is graphene better than ceramic?" is one of the most asked, and most misunderstood, questions in car care. The honest answer starts with a correction: graphene is not a rival to ceramic coating. It is a type of ceramic-based coating with a different formulation. Here is what that means in practice.

The Short Version

  • Ceramic coating is a liquid that cures into a hard, water-repelling layer on your paint. It makes the surface slick and glossy and helps it stay clean.
  • Graphene coating blends graphene oxide into that ceramic layer. It is designed to be hard but flexible, to spread surface heat instead of holding it, to resist water spotting and to leave a deep, dark-looking gloss.

Both sit on top of paint. Neither stops stone chips or dents. For that you need PPF. See PPF vs ceramic coating.

How They Differ in Daily Use

  • Water spotting: graphene is designed to resist the mineral spots left by hard water drying on paint, which matters in cities where cars are often washed and parked in the sun.
  • Heat: graphene is designed to spread heat across the surface rather than hold it in one spot.
  • Gloss: graphene is known for a deep, dark-looking finish, especially on darker cars.
  • Hardness and feel: both give a slick, easy-to-clean surface. Real-world behaviour depends on the product, the preparation and the installer.

Where Borophene Fits

Borophene is a newer topcoat made around a single-atom sheet of boron. It aims for an extremely low-friction surface that resists acids, sap and industrial fallout, with tight water beading. It goes over a base coating or over PPF as a sacrificial top layer that is refreshed at each service.

What Carsbuddy Offers

As an XPEL authorized installer, we apply XPEL Fusion Plus ceramic coating in four versions: Lite (1-year warranty), Classic (4-year), Premium (8-year) and Satin for satin finishes (4-year). We also offer graphene and borophene coatings. The full range is in ceramic coating options explained.

How to Choose

  • A daily car that lives outdoors in heat and dust: graphene is a sensible choice.
  • New or luxury car, longest-term result: Fusion Plus Premium.
  • Most daily and family cars: Fusion Plus Classic.
  • First time with coating: Fusion Plus Lite.
  • Satin or matte paint: Fusion Plus Satin.
  • Extra layer over a base coat or PPF: borophene.

This is a starting point, not a rule. We look at the paint and how the car is used before recommending.

Preparation Matters More Than the Label

Whatever coating you choose, it seals in what is beneath it. Paint is washed, decontaminated and, where needed, polished before application. A well-prepared car with a modest coating will usually look better than a poorly prepared one with an expensive coating.

Looking After a Coated Car

Coating makes washing easier, not unnecessary. Use a proper two-bucket wash, avoid harsh brushes and strong chemicals, and come back for maintenance when advised.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is graphene coating better than ceramic coating? Graphene is a ceramic-based coating with a different formulation, designed to be flexible, to run cooler and to resist water spotting. Which is better depends on your car and priorities.

Does graphene coating last longer? Longevity depends on the product, the preparation, how the car is used and how it is looked after. Warranty terms vary by coating, so ask for them in writing.

Can I put graphene or ceramic over PPF? Yes. A ceramic, graphene or borophene layer over PPF is a common combination.

Will either coating stop scratches and chips? No. Coatings add slickness, gloss and chemical resistance. They do not give impact protection. PPF does.

Where can I get graphene coating done? Carsbuddy is an XPEL authorized installer with studios in Bangalore and Kochi.
